ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • You must be claiming Universal Credit and be 16-24 years old
  • You must be referred to this vacancy by your Job Coach before you can apply

THE ROLE

A traditional engineering position making hand crafted Surgical Instruments from Stainless Steel. A practical hands on role which involves using hand tools (e.g. hammers, files and other associated hand tools used in traditional metal work).You will be assigned a time served Mentor, and receive one to one training to learn a traditional craft.
Full on the job training is provided.

DUTIES INCLUDE

  • Making Hand Made Surgical Instruments.
  • Fitting / Assembly (which includes hand filing, grinding, drilling, bead blasting).
  • Glazing (working on machines with abrasive belts, working on polishing wheels and grinding wheels).

FUTURE PROSPECTS

To become a fully qualified Surgical Instrument Maker.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • GCSE English – Minimum Grade C or Equivalent
  • GCSE Maths – Minimum Grade C or Equivalent

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Good Hand Eye Coordination
  • Ability to stay focused, good concentration and perseverance skills
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and work to tolerances (+/- 0.25mm)
  • Ability to retain verbal and written information
  • Prior engineering experience / related hobbies would be beneficial but not essential

WORKING HOURS (39.5 per week)

Monday to Thursday: 7.30am - 16:45pm (30 mins Lunch)

Friday: 7.30am - 12.00pm (EARLY FINISH)

ADDITIONAL EMPLOYABILITY SUPPORT
Wraparound employability support will be provided by Work-Wise Foundation:
1 Day (Indispensable Me, Induction Training) – For the new starters including behaviours at work, do’s and don’ts, expectations and understanding the company and their role. Designed to help overcome initial nervousness and worries (e.g. Issues around travel to work), build confidence and awareness of where to get help and support and stay safe. This will also allow those on placement to meet others in the same situation and build a peer network of support.

3 Days Be Ready (Employability Training) - Understanding what characteristics and skills the individual has and areas for development. Building confidence,
knowledge and self-awareness around: -

  • Responsibility, reliability, self-management, attendance, punctuality, adaptability, resilience, determination, and confidence.
  • Knowledge (Work awareness Character and principles of business, creativity and enterprise, practical application of skills to work and understanding of personal skills, talents, and qualities)
  • General Work Skills (Planning and organising, critical thinking and evaluating, problem solving, decision making, customer service, communication, and teamwork)
  • Working within a Team, Teambuilding and Communication.
  • Preparing for the next steps into employment including labour market awareness, CV preparation, job applications, interview/assessment centres preparation and practical practice (face to face and virtual interviews).
